Miss America Brings Shame to Americans by Working at Planned Parenthood
Feel free to read the article (I don't recommend it, it's a waste of time), but the main idea of the article was to shame the newly selected Miss America for her association with Planned Parenthood. The article then goes on to discredit Planned Parenthood on the account that it, apparently, vehemently promotes women to undergo abortions as a means of birth control.
To coherently express my distaste, I have formulated a list of all of the things I find to be wrong with this article:
- Using Miss America as a gateway to bashing abortion: the article itself had very little to do with Miss America, but more to do with making an argument against abortion supported by zero facts.
- Discrediting Planned Parenthood as an organization: regardless of your opinion on abortion, Planned Parenthood's overall mission is to provide a means of contraception to individual women in their own individual situations, not to promote abortion.
- BIAS. BIAS. BIAS (and a little more bias): a majority of the article runs under the pretense of "abortion is horrible and Miss America is horrible because Planned Parenthood gives abortions and so on and so forth. If that is how you feel, that is your right, but back your argument up with some degree of fact, or at least moral reasoning.
The main point that I want to make with this article is not about Miss America or abortion. It is about the positive aspects of Planned Parenthood that are completely ignored. Planned Parenthood, as I stated before, is dedicated to providing young women with options. The organization provides birth control to women for virtually no cost, allowing young girls to take charge of their reproductive health BEFORE is becomes necessary to take corrective measures. In addition to preventative measures, Planned Parenthood also facilitates testing for sexually transmitted diseases as well as treatment in instances where a disease has been contracted. And yes, Planned Parenthood does perform abortions in some cases. The overall theme here, however, is that there are OPTIONS available.
Whether or not you believe in abortion, quite frankly it is not your choice. This country is on the road to allowing women reproductive freedom whether you agree or not. It is the choice of each individual woman how she approaches preventative and corrective measures in regards to pregnancy.
In conclusion, do not be too quick to judge. Anyone can say "I'd never do that" until they are faced with a tough situation. Also, ladies, be aware of your options. Take control of your body before it comes to the point of making a difficult decision, and know that if you are faced with a situation that you will have to deal with it in one way or another.
